Prerequisites/Notes: MUTH 301 Catalog Description : Intermediate studies in music theory and analysis, focusing on a particular theoretical model, analytical approach, or corpus of works. Topics vary from year to year. Course may be repeated when the topic is different. TOPICS FOR Winter 2027: Queer and Feminist Music Theory PREREQUISITES: MUTH 301 Whereas the field of musicology has a robust history of considering gender and sexuality, it has not always been as apparent how (or if) these identity factors ought to play a role in music-theoretical and music-analytical research. We'll read early attempts to sketch out feminist and/or queer music theory and follow these currents into the more recent past. We'll practice applying various frameworks in our analysis of selected works, experiment with different modes of analytic writing, and consider specific subtopics, such as incorporating trans studies into music theory and bringing queer and feminist frameworks into the music theory and aural skills classrooms.
