Catalog Description : This course explores the works, thought, and impact of Fyodor Dostoevsky and Leo Tolstoy. Possible topics include: Crimes and Punishments, Spirituality and Religion, History and Narrative, In the Writer's Laboratory. Taught in English. Russian majors and minors may participate in a two-unit tutorial in which discussions and some course readings will be in Russian. May be repeated when topic is different. TOPICS FOR Winter 2027: Dostoevsky and Existentialism (in English) PREREQUISITES: None In this course, we will read the works Dostoevsky wrote as he developed his dialogic style and the foundations of his existentialist critique of modernity. Primary texts will be supplemented with readings for historical background. Texts will include Notes From The House Of The Dead, Notes From Underground, and Crime And Punishment. The class will be seminar-style. Students will write frequent low-stakes reaction journals, two longer papers, and one revision. In English.
