Prerequisites/Notes: 200-level art history course or instructor approval Catalog Description : An examination of a particular topic in ancient art history. Students are expected to carry out independent research through a series of guided assignments. The topic will change periodically. May be repeated when topic the is different. Not open to students who have previously received or need to receive credit for ARHI 400 with the same topic. TOPICS FOR Spring 2027: Topics for Spring 2027: Pilgrimage and Material Culture: Early Christian to Renaissance. This interdisciplinary seminar focuses on the material culture, art, and architecture of pilgrimage in the Christian tradition from the fourth to the sixteenth centuries in Europe and the broader Mediterranean. Using frameworks of material religion and material culture, this class will explore how the sacred is remembered and materialized in reliquaries, votives, amulets, souvenir badges, manuscripts, prints, and more. This class will also consider how the material culture worn and used by pilgrims and clergy interacted with the art, architecture, and sensory environment of larger shrine sites, ranging from Qalaat Semaan in Syria to Sainte Foy in Conques as well as Rome, Canterbury, Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela, Cologne, and more. By revisiting various pilgrimage sites over different time periods, the course explores how religious material culture changes over time, incorporates syncretism, and responds to political and theological developments.
