TOPICS FOR Spring 2027: Media and Identity
PREREQUISITES: GEST 100, or another GEST class or consent of instructor
This discussion-based course examines the relationship between media, representation, and the construction of identity. Students will be introduced to theories of representation and authenticity as we explore depictions of “real life” in various forms of media. Why are we so obsessed with ordinary people doing ordinary things? How do performances of authenticity reiterate and renegotiate societal norms? Students will practice close-reading multimedia primary texts (like social media posts, reality tv shows, streaming platforms, short-form content) and develop argumentative and analytical skills through progressive writing tasks. No prerequisites.
Prerequisites/Notes: Media and Identity Catalog Description : Explores a particular topic of current interest in gender studies, and may be cross-listed with other departments. Topics will vary with each offering of the course. Different iterations of the course may be taken for credit with the instructor's consent.
