Prerequisites/Notes: BIOL 130 and BIOL 150 or instructor approval Catalog Description : A course designed to offer students an opportunity to study important issues in biology not covered in other regularly offered classes. Activities may include reading and analysis of material from primary literature, consideration of interdisciplinary connections, and field and laboratory activities. TOPICS FOR Spring 2027: Evolutionary Development Biology PREREQUISITES: Junior standing or consent of instructor This seminar course explores evolutionary developmental biology, linking classical questions about the origins of biodiversity with modern approaches used to address those questions. Students will examine the molecular basis of body plan evolution, the role of regulatory pathways in generating novel anatomy, and how ecological/environmental influences modulate developmental trajectories. Through active discussion and analysis of primary literature, the course integrates evidence from comparative anatomy, embryology, genetics, genomics, and phylogenetics to understand how developmental changes drive evolutionary transformations. TOPICS FOR Spring 2027: Mechanisms of neuropharmacology and neuropsychiatric disease PREREQUISITES: BIOL 260, BIOL 325, BIOL 354 or BIOL 444 (CHEM 340) Neurophysiology, including drug interactions and effects, vary widely across development, physiological state, and neuropsychiatric condition/disease. Here, we will take a multi-pronged approach to understand how fundamental mechanisms of pharmacology function in both normal and altered physiological conditions. Using both genetic and biochemical manipulations we will explore in-depth the mechanisms by which drugs and endogenous neuronal compounds can interact with neuronal and glial cells types. We will examine these interactions (and downstream effects) at the circuit, cellular, and molecular levels to build a comprehensive model of drug effects on neuronal physiology.
