Catalog Description : This course allows for an in-depth examination of topics in Film & Media Studies across time, for example, the work of women directors, or it permits a detailed analysis of special topics, for example, Turkish-German or Central European film. May be repeated when topic is different. PREREQUISITES: FIST 100 or FIST 114, or instructor approval TOPICS FOR Spring 2027: American Queer Cinema History PREREQUISITES: FIST 100 or FIST 114, or consent of instructor This course explores the history of queer cinema in America, from depictions of homosexuality and gender play in the silent era, through the breakthroughs of the New Queer Cinema in the nineties, up to the queer filmmakers of today. We’ll examine aesthetic and narrative strategies, and the shifting cultural and industrial contexts that shaped the possibilities for queer filmmaking across the past 130 years.
