Catalog Description : Through comparative study, this course explores how communities sacralize space and time through ritual and narrative. Case studies will include the Hajj to Mecca, Japanese Shinto shrines, the Roman Catholic Mass, and Mormon settlement of Utah. Readings introduce theories of ritual and the sacred. When feasible, we will conduct site visits. Students design an individual project focused on a chosen tradition or anticipated travel. Seminar paper required.
